Purpose

WHAT DRIVES YOU EVERYDAY?

Purpose gives direction to action. It’s the thread that connects who we are with what the world needs. In an age marked by ecological disruption and social inequality, purpose transforms anxiety into agency by turning concern into courage and ideas into impact. Yet discovering it isn’t always simple. For many people, purpose begins as a question: What kind of world do I want to help build, and how can my life contribute to it?

I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.

— Angela Davis, American political activist and philosopher

Across cultures, people have long sought ways to connect meaning and action. In Japan, the concept of ikigai — “a reason for being” — captures the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what can sustain you. Modern research in positive psychology and education echoes this wisdom: having a sense of purpose is linked to higher well-being, persistence, and resilience. Studies from the University of California, Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center and the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence show that purpose strengthens motivation and protects against burnout, especially when paired with community and reflection.

Purpose also evolves. Passions shift, skills grow, and the needs of our communities change. The goal isn’t to find one fixed calling, but to continually align values and actions as life unfolds. The philosophy of Essentialism, which focuses on “the vital few over the trivial many,” offers a companion lens, reminding us that meaningful work requires boundaries as well as drive. True purpose balances passion with sustainability; it fuels energy without consuming it.

Around the world, young leaders are redefining what purposeful climate action looks like. Activists such as Xiye Bastida and Vanessa Nakate connect ecological restoration with justice and inclusion, reminding us that protecting the planet also means protecting people. Turning Green and our partner organizations like Friends of the Earth share the same ethos: helping students and communities turn personal conviction into collective action. From campus efforts to eliminate single-use plastics to global movements demanding corporate accountability, purpose becomes most powerful when it’s shared.

The journey toward purpose is not a straight line. It’s an ongoing dialogue between self-knowledge and service, curiosity and commitment. For those who have reached this stage of Project Green Challenge, purpose may already be emerging — in the causes that move you, the teammates who inspire you, or the inspiration that keeps you learning long after the day’s challenge ends. As you look ahead, let ikigai guide your next steps. Seek the overlap between what lights you up and what lifts the world. Purpose isn’t found once; it is cultivated — day by day, choice by choice, together.

CHALLENGE

Green

20 POINTS

THINK

Purpose begins with self-awareness. Ikigai — the intersection of what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what can sustain you — helps turn your values into direction. Instead of trying to find all the answers right away, notice patterns and connections in your life. Purpose grows from paying
attention.

CHALLENGE

  • Start by checking out an Ikigai diagram.
  • Then, draw your own version on paper or digitally, leaving space to fill in details from your life in each circle.
    • Reflect on what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you could be paid for. Add your thoughts in the matching circles.
    • Notice where the circles overlap — your possible passion, mission, profession, and vocation. Can you spot your ikigai?
  • Write a 100–150 word reflection about what surprised you and one small step you’ll take this week to align with your ikigai. Maybe it’s doing more of something you love, or developing a skill that excites you.
  • Share a photo of your Ikigai diagram on Instagram with a caption explaining the concept in your own words, and a small step you’ll take to align with your ikigai.
  • Tag @turninggreenorg and @foe_us in both the image and the caption, and include #PGC2025.

40 POINTS

THINK

You’ve come so far! Now’s the moment to pause, reflect, and tell your story — to see how your purpose has evolved and where it might lead to next.

CHALLENGE

  • Record a 90–120 second vertical video called “My PGC Purpose.” Answer these prompts in your own words (no script needed):
    • Before PGC: Did you already have a sense of purpose, or were you still figuring out what mattered most to you? What has helped shape or change your perspective on “purpose” throughout this journey?
    • Now on Day 23: Have things shifted for you — in your ideas, feelings, or habits around climate, environmental or social justice? How and why do you think that change happened? Do you see yourself differently now? Perhaps as someone who leads, influences, or inspires others in some way?
    • Looking ahead: As you move toward Day 30 and beyond, what do you hope to do next — in your school, community, or life — to keep living your purpose? What excites or motivates you about taking that step?
  • Quick Tips: Find a quiet space, keep your phone steady, face the camera directly, and do your best to have a clear voice + good audio. Please add on-screen subtitles.
  • Share your video on Instagram with one still image (a frame from your video or your ikigai). In your caption, include two short takeaways you want others to remember.
  • Tag @turninggreenorg and @foe_us in both the video and the caption, and include #PGC2025.

Greenest

60 POINTS

Due on October 26 at 6am Pacific Time

THINK

Purpose becomes real when we act with others. Every small step shared with a friend, classmate, or community group builds momentum — and shows that lasting change grows through connection.

CHALLENGE

  • Choose one small, climate-positive action that brings your purpose to life. (Examples: host a 20-minute info share, set up a swap box, ask a café to pilot a bring-your-cup sign, start a native plants corner, run a one-day food waste count, or recruit 3 new teammates.)
  • Team up with at least one person or group — a friend, club, teacher, or community organization. It can even be someone you met during PGC!
  • Create a one-page plan that includes:
    • Your action and why it matters (3–4 sentences)
    • Who’s involved and a simple timeline
    • Two success checks: measurable ways to track your impact (e.g: people reached, items collected, plants planted, cups reused)
  • Show your progress by including one image that captures your action taking shape — a photo, signup screenshot or message confirming your event/date.
  • Submit your PDF plan and progress image.
  • Post a short Instagram recap — a photo or 10–20 second clip with one key lesson or takeaway for others to remember.
  • Tag @turninggreenorg and @foe_us in both the video/ image and the caption, and include #PGC2025.
