Soil

HOW CAN HEALTHY SOIL HEAL THE EARTH?

Beneath every step is a living system that keeps the planet alive. Just one handful of soil contains billions of microorganisms that recycle nutrients, store water, and support life above and below the ground. These tiny communities are the foundation of every forest, farm, and ecosystem on Earth.

We might say that Earth has the spirit of growth; that its flesh is the soil.

But human activity is quickly damaging that foundation. Industrial farming, deforestation, poor land management, synthetic fertilizers, and climate change cause the loss of more than 24 billion tons of soil each year — much faster than nature can rebuild it. It can take up to 500 years to form a single inch of topsoil, so these losses are almost impossible to recover. As erosion strips the land of nutrients, crops produce less, food security suffers, and ecosystems become more vulnerable.

The damage spreads far beyond the soil — from polluted waterways and ocean dead zones to shrinking farmland and health threats like Valley Fever in the American Southwest. Dry degraded soil can harbor harmful fungi that disproportionately affect Latino and Indigenous farmworker communities near degraded land. Over efforts to control nature have harmed the very systems that sustain us.

The good news is that regeneration is possible. Around the world, farmers, scientists, and students are restoring soil with regenerative and nature-based practices. Techniques like crop rotation, cover crops, composting, and planting perennials rebuild organic matter, retain water, and naturally fertilize the land. Healthy soil stores carbon, supports biodiversity, and keeps water in the landscape — showing that working with nature, and not against it, is the key to a healthy planet.

This movement is growing. Kiss the Ground teaches and inspires people worldwide to join the regenerative agriculture movement. Re:wild Your Campus empowers students to transform school grounds into native ecosystems that restore biodiversity and protect soil health. Everyone creates sustainable, plant-based body care products using regenerative, organic, and ethically sourced ingredients, working with farmers who care for soil, water, and local communities.

You don’t have to be a farmer to help heal the soil — every choice matters. What you eat, how you manage waste, and the brands you support all make a difference. Choose local and regenerative foods; compost food scraps to return nutrients to the Earth; support farmers and businesses that care for the planet, and share their stories to inspire others.

Protecting soil means protecting our future. By choosing regeneration in how we eat, grow, and live, we can restore balance to the planet from the ground up.

CHALLENGE

Green

20 POINTS

THINK

Soil is alive — it holds the memory of the Earth. Every handful shows growth, decay, and renewal. Most of the time we walk over it without thinking about our connection to it. Let’s change that today.

CHALLENGE

  • Step outside and find a patch of soil, garden bed, or even a houseplant pot.
  • Take a moment to notice its color, texture, and smell. Look for signs of life — roots, worms, insects, or fungi.
  • Write a short reflection about what you observed and how it made you feel about soil as a living system rather than just “dirt.”
  • Post a close-up photo of what you explored with a short caption that includes one thing you learned or realized about soil.
  • Tag @turninggreenorg, @eoproducts, @rewildyourcampus, and @KissTheGround in both the image and caption, and include #PGC2025.

SUBMIT YOUR WORK

  1. Create a PDF: Combine your responses into a single PDF.
  2. Include: Your name (or team name), username, and school on the PDF.
  3. File Naming: firstname_lastname_day15_green_2025.pdf or teamname_day15_green_2025
  4. Example: kasie_jones_day15_green_2025.pdf or GreenTeam_day15_green_2025.pdf
  5. Avoid Symbols: (including #) or spaces in the file name.
  6. File Size: Must be under 5 MB.
  7. Submit: Upload your PDF. If you do not see the upload button, you need to login. A green confirmation message will appear if your submission is successful. If you don’t see this, please try again.
  8. Points: If your total points don’t update, your submission may not have uploaded correctly—please retry.

THINK

Regenerative gardens help heal soil, support wildlife and nourish people and the planet. Every seed planted and every handful of compost rebuilds life underground and captures carbon above it. Gardening is a way to restore — proof that regeneration can start anywhere, even right outside your door.

CHALLENGE

  • Watch today’s video about soil health.
  • Pick a space — indoors or outdoors — where you could plant a garden.
  • Design a theoretical regenerative garden plan using guidance from the Beginner’s Guide to Gardening, 5 Easy Ways to Make Your Garden Regenerative, and the Regenerative Living Guide. Your plan should include:
    • Plant Selection: List at least six plants you would grow.
    • Why: Explain why you chose them and how they benefit soil, climate, and people.
    • Practices: Describe at least three regenerative or climate-friendly methods you would use and how each improves soil health and supports biodiversity.
  • Make a sketch of your garden and post it on Instagram with a caption summarizing your plan and what excites you most about it.
  • Tag @turninggreenorg, @eoproducts, @rewildyourcampus, and @KissTheGround in both the image and caption, and include #PGC2025.

THINK

Using synthetic pesticides can significantly harm soil health. One of the primary concerns is the disruption of soil microbial communities. These chemicals can kill or inhibit beneficial microbes like bacteria and fungi that keep soil fertile and support plant growth.

CHALLENGE

  • Explore the great work Re:Wild Your Campus is doing to remove synthetic pesticides and transition to organic land care on U.S. college campuses. Read this article on the negative effects of synthetic pesticides.
  • Create an Awareness Campaign:
    • How would you educate your community about the risks of synthetic pesticides? Suggest safer alternatives.
    • Include actionable steps that a campus grounds office or parks could take and ways your community can get involved.
  • Design a Poster:
    • Show the effects of synthetic pesticides on human health and biodiversity. Include a call to action.
    • Use visuals like graphs, images or other eye-catching elements.
  • Send Your Poster:
    • Share your poster with a school administrator or facilities office along with a sample letter (feel free to adapt) explaining why this issue matters to you.
  • Spread the Word:
    • Post your poster in at least three places (virtual or physical).
    • Take a photo or screenshot to document where it was shared.
  • Share on Instagram:
    • Post your photo with an informative caption on Instagram.
    • ag @TurningGreenOrg, @rewildyourcampus, local leadership, and use the hashtag #PGC2025.

Extra Credit

POINTS

Extra Credit is due on October 25 at 6am PT. Up to 100 points will be awarded for outstanding work.

THINK

Our partner Kiss the Ground created the documentary Common Ground, which shows how industrial farming harms the planet and how regenerative farming can heal it. The film illustrates how restoring soil health can balance ecosystems, replenish water, and help feed the world.

CHALLENGE

  • Invite at least three friends or family members to watch Common Ground, either in person or virtually. (Password: roco108).
  • After watching, lead a discussion using questions like:
    • What message stood out to you the most?
    • Which scene was most powerful or moving?
    • What challenges does regenerative farming face, and can they be overcome?
    • Could regenerative organic farming help solve climate change? Why or why not?
    • What steps can we take individually and collectively to support regenerative organic agriculture?
  • Afterward, recap what you learned from the film and discussion.
  • Post an image from the documentary or your watch party on Instagram with a caption highlighting your favorite takeaway about healthy soils to raise awareness.
  • Tag @turninggreenorg and @KissTheGround in both the image and caption, and include #PGC2025.
