OVERVIEW

“We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time, meeting each thing that comes up … discovering we have the strength to stare it down.”
– Eleanor Roosevelt

From teachers and friends to activists, scientists and leaders, there are countless heroes among us. Whether household names or everyday citizens, world-renowned or local to your community, someone you know or have only read about from afar,  people are standing in solidarity with the planet, its species and all people. Powerful, passionate, proud individuals in every sector dedicate their lives to solving the social and environmental injustices in our world. In your eyes, what are the traits and characteristics that make for eco-hero status?

Through Project Green Challenge, we seek to not only empower you with information, but also to introduce you to mentors, role models and leaders engaged in positive change. We find eco-heroes in each and every one of our partners, honored to support incredible mission-aligned work and positive impacts by companies, organizations, media, educators and activists.

We read about heroes catalyzing climate action, like Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist who initiated the global School Strikes for Climate that has mobilized millions of youth around the world (and continues each Friday!) to demand change from leaders, or Xiuhtexcatl Martinez, an indigenous climate activist and hip-hop artist, using his powerful voice on the front lines of a youth-led lawsuit against the federal government for its failure to protect the planet for future generations.

For every challenge, there are solutions. Whether one person or a collective of great minds, there is nothing we can’t solve to help make our planet thrive. What does it take to be a hero? Passion, dedication, and a bit of courage!

So, who’s your eco-hero? Today, we give you an opportunity to discover different people who are setting the stage and forging new paths toward a healthy, sustainable, just planet. We all possess extraordinary capacity to rise in responsibility to ourselves and to all humanity.

Greener

40 POINTS

Think

Powerhouses in our backyards and across the globe are stepping up every day, every hour, every minute to effect change; that is how it has always been throughout history and what gives us hope in the present day!

Challenge

In a local, national or global context, who is a person that you would name an eco-hero? Identify that person you admire, get to know their story and introduce them to us. Approach this challenge as if you were writing a story for your campus newspaper, major press outlet or a favorite blog.

  • Share the name and a photo of your hero
  • Tell us their story in 500 words; where are they from, what have they accomplished, speak about challenges and obstacles they faced, and why you were drawn to them
  • What resonated with you from their experience?

If you were to meet this person, what would you share about how they have impacted you? Write up three questions for your hero. See if you can find an email, social media handle or mailing address for your hero to tell them how they have inspired you. We all need and deserve recognition and support in our journeys!

Greenest

60 POINTS

Think

Do you consider yourself a hero? We do! Sometimes we are reluctant to acknowledge our own capacity (and awesomeness). We need leaders with confidence who empower others to move us forward toward a just, healthy, thriving future. How can you begin, at this very moment, to develop a solution to a current pressing challenge, starting on your campus?

Over this past month, you have learned about many themes related to everyday life. You have learned that you have the power to change the world, one step at a time. Now, it’s your turn to identify an issue or cause, that you feel passionate about, one that will prompt you to take action – to be that change.

Challenge

Reflect on PGC and one specific moment where you felt like an eco hero. What was that moment and how did it play out? Write a short reflection (200 words or less).

Upload an image of you as an eco hero. Caption it with a quote that encapsulates your eco hero self. What will you champion? What will you do in the world to help heal our planet? Why? How? Post it on the social media platform of your choice and tag @turninggreenorg with #PGC2019.

Deliverables

Upload a PDF document with your responses and a screenshot of your post. Please include your name (or team name), username, email address, and school.
