OVERVIEW

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” ~Jane Goodall, Primatologist, Author, Activist

Welcome to Day 1 of Project Green Challenge!

Hi PGC 2018 participants. We couldn’t be more excited that you’re embarking on this month-long adventure with us, for you and the planet.

This journey has been designed to change your perspective, shift your worldview, and empower you with the tools to make waves. However you’re feeling — brimming with excitement for what’s to come, curiosity about the unknown, or eagerness to get going, it’s all just as it should be.

Through it all, know this: we’re here with you for the next 30 days.

Every PGC journey is unique. You are all starting from a different place and it’s your diverse perspectives that bring PGC to life. Whether you feel like you’re already living a conscious lifestyle or you have no idea what that even means, know that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.

Before you get started, take a minute to think about your WHY. Why were you inspired to sign up for PGC? What motivated you?

Here at Turning Green, we are inspired by two guiding principles. First, individual and collective action = massive impact. We deeply believe in the power of one to make tangible and actionable change in lives, on campuses, and in communities.

Second, environmental and social justice issues are interconnected; one cannot be resolved without addressing the other. Thus, for many challenges, you will have the opportunity to reflect upon how that day’s topic connects to a social issue and mobilize to act.

We can’t wait for you to be part of this journey.

Let’s get started!

CHALLENGE

Green

20 POINTS

Think

One. It’s a number that’s gotten a bad reputation. Far from the loneliest number, it’s actually the most powerful. Why? Because every movement starts with one. Someone. Even though the state of our planet may feel overwhelming and you might not even know where to start, we deeply believe that one person has the power to impact big, bold, bodacious change.

Challenge

This is your starting point – Day 1. Read through the content below. Then prepare your response and follow the submission information under “Deliverables.”

Take a few minutes to watch at least 5 of this series of 1-minute videos, “Nature is Speaking”, created by Conservation International and narrated by a variety of celebrities.

  • Tell us which video touched you the most and why (at least 150 words)?
  • Share the video with a caption on a social media medium of your choice, explaining why the video touched you and why your followers should watch it too. Remember to tag @turninggreen and #PGC2018!
  • Then, take some time to fill out the PGC Entry Survey here. We will ask you similar questions at the other end of the challenge so you can see how far you’ve come.

Deliverables

Upload your responses in a PDF document. Include answers to the questions above and what time you submitted your entry survey. Please include your name (or team name), username, email address, and school.

Submission Guidelines

  • If you do not see an upload button, you need to log in
  • Please submit all entries as PDFs – no word or pages docs.
  • Please save filenames using the following format: firstname_lastname_challengeday_challengelevel_year.pdf
    (ex: kasie_shils_day1_green_2018.pdf)
  • Do not include # or spaces in filenames
  • Please be sure to include all content for your submission in one doc
  • Do not upload a file bigger than 5 MB
  • You will get a confirmation on screen that your submission uploaded correctly (green) or that it failed (red) and to try again.
  • If your total points do not change, your submission did not load correctly and you will have to try again. You can see your points total by logging out and back in again.
  • If you are having trouble uploading, try using a different browser
  • Send any questions you have to info@turninggreen.org
  • Don’t forget to post about the challenge and your learnings/doings on social media and tag us on Facebook @TurningGreen, on Twitter @TurningGreenOrg, and on Instagram @TurningGreenOrg and use #PGC2018.
The deadline for entering this challenge has past.

Greener

40 POINTS

Think

PGC is about transformation. But transformation is a process; in order to improve, it’s important to first understand who you are at this moment in your life. That way, at the end of the month, we can look back and see what transformation looks like for you.

Challenge

  • Your first task for this challenge is to watch today’s video. It’s one of Turning Green’s favorite videos and we hope it will inspire you as you start your PGC journey!
  • Now we want to get to know you. Use your creativity to make something that represents you (photo, video, poem, drawing, etc.), and include the following in your deliverable:
    • Tell us your name, school, city, state and/or country.
    • Share 5 words that describe you.
    • How do you want to change the world?

Deliverables

Upload a PDF document with your creative presentation (please make sure you make the video public so we can view it), and answers to the questions. Please include your name (or team name), username, email address, and school.

Submission Guidelines

  • If you do not see an upload button, you need to log in

Greenest

60 POINTS

Think

Too often the conversation around environmentalism and change defaults to a myth that our world is devoid of empathy, that somewhere along the way, we’ve lost our ability to connect and work toward the greater good. Let’s try and flip this story and instead, imagine what the world would look like if empathy was the most important value of our time.

Challenge

  • Take a look at this National Geographic project and get familiar with the “empathy gap”.
  • Either take two of your own photos or find two images that compare your vision of today with your hopes for tomorrow.
  • Use Photoblend or another overlay application to blend your photos together like Daniella Zalcman did for National Geographic.
  • Write an inspiring caption with your thoughts about how the photos capture the world we live in today, and the world you hopes for tomorrow.
  • Post your photo to instagram or facebook with your caption. Tag @natgeo and @turninggreenorg and hashtag #empathygap and #PGC2018. If you found images online be sure to credit those photographers in the caption.

Deliverables

Upload your responses in a PDF document. Include your photo, a screenshot of your social media post, and list any responses. Please include your name (or team name), username, email address, and school.

Submission Guidelines

  • If you do not see an upload button, you need to log in
