OVERVIEW

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” ~Jane Goodall, Primatologist, Author, Activist

Welcome to Day 1 of Project Green Challenge!

You made it! We couldn’t be more excited that you’re here and embarking on this adventure with us.

The start of any journey can be complicated, especially when you are on the precipice of one like #PGC2017 designed to change your perspective, shift your worldview, and empower you with the resources to make waves. That’s right — make waves. You may be filled with excitement for what’s to come, anxiety about the unknowns, doubt around whether a conscious lifestyle is for you, and eagerness to get going.

Through it all, know this, we are with you over the next 30 days.

Each PGC journey is unique. Everyone is starting from a different place and it’s your diverse perspectives that bring PGC to life. Whether you feel like you are already living a conscious lifestyle or you have no idea what that even means, know that you are exactly where you’re meant to be.

Before you get started, take a minute to think about your WHY. What was your inspiration to sign up for PGC? Whatever your why is keep, it at forefront of your thinking throughout the month. Watch as your why carries you through these daily challenges and observe how it changes over the next four weeks.

Here at Turning Green our PGC why is simple: collective change = massive impact. We believe in your power to effect tangible change in your lives, on your campuses and in our world.

Whatever your why is, we can’t wait to be part of this journey with you.

And with that, let’s get started!

CHALLENGE

Green

20 POINTS

Think

One. It’s a number that’s gotten a bad reputation. Far from the loneliest number, it is the most powerful. Why? Because every movement has to start with one. With someone. The daily news can feel like a consistent horror show, so much so that it can seem overwhelming to act, or even know where to begin. But bold, brave action is never far away.

Challenge

This is your first step – your first challenge! Read through each bullet point below and pay special attention to the bolded pieces, those are the bullet points with the action you need to take. Then prepare your responses and follow the submission information under “Deliverables.”

  • Take a few minutes to watch today’s video, “What’s Possible”, directed by Louie Schwartzberg, and narrated by Morgan Freeman, for the opening of the UN Climate Summit.
  • Think about the possibilities in your own life. Share two things that inspired you about the film and what those two things have made you believe are possible.
  • Then, take some time to fill out our PGC Entry Survey here. We will ask you similar questions at the other end of the challenge so you can see how far you’ve come!

Deliverables

Upload your responses in a PDF document. Include answers to the questions above and what time you submitted your entry survey. Please include your name (or team name), username, email address, and school.

Submission Guidelines

  • Please submit all entries as PDFs – no word or pages docs.
  • Please save filenames using the following format: firstname_lastname_challengeday_challengelevel_year.pdf (ex: kasie_shils_day1_greener_2017.pdf)
  • Do not include # or spaces in filenames
  • Please be sure to include all content for your submission in one doc
  • Do not upload a file bigger than 5 MB
  • You will get a confirmation that your submission uploaded correctly. If you did not get a confirmation, please try again.
  • If your total points do not change, your submission did not load correctly and you will have to try again. You can see your point total by opening the Edit Profile tab on the bottom nav bar. Your point total will be at the top of the page.
  • Send any questions you have to info@turninggreen.org
  • Don’t forget to post about the challenge and your learnings/doings on social media and tag us on Facebook @TurningGreen, on Twitter @TurningGreenOrg, and on Instagram @TurningGreenOrg and use #PGC2017.

Greener

40 POINTS

Think

PGC is about transformation. But transformation is only possible with a beginning and an end. That’s why it’s important to understand who you are at this moment in your life and then, at the end of the month, we can look back and see what transformation looks like for you.

Challenge

We want to get to know you! Create a short video (no longer than :90 seconds) with you on camera integrating your responses to the following questions: (Ask a friend to shoot it for you. Make sure it looks good and the sound is clear.)

  • Who you are in the broad sense (how do you identify yourself?)
  • What do you hope to take away from this PGC experience? (one strong statement)
  • Where do you currently fall on the “sustainability spectrum” (do you consider yourself an environmentalist? Are you just getting started?)
  • When have you felt a need for change either in your own life, your community, or society at large? (one anecdote)
  • Why did you Sign Up for PGC 2017?

Deliverables

Upload a PDF document with a link to your video. Make sure the link is public so we can view it. Please include your name (or team name), username, email address, and school.

60 POINTS

Think

Too often the conversation around environmentalism and change defaults to a myth that our world is devoid of empathy, that somewhere along the way, we’ve lost our ability to connect and work toward the greater good. Let’s try and flip this story and instead, imagine what the world would look like if empathy was the most important value of our time.

Challenge

  • Take a look at this National Geographic project and get familiar with the “empathy gap”.
  • Either take two of your own photos or find two images that compare your vision of today with your hopes for tomorrow.
  • Use Photoblend or another overlay application to blend your photos together like Daniella Zalcman did for National Geographic.
  • Write an inspiring caption with your thoughts about how the photos capture the world we live in today, and the world you hope for tomorrow.
  • Post your photo to instagram or facebook with your caption. Tag @natgeo and @turninggreenorg and hashtag #empathygap and #PGC2017. If you found images online be sure to credit those photographers in the caption.

Deliverables

Upload your responses in a PDF document. Include a screenshot of your social media post, and list any responses. Please include your name (or team name), username, email address, and school.
